U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., has been under investigation for a year and goes before the House Ethics Committee Thursday.
She's accused of campaign finance violations in addition to criminal charges in Florida for allegedly funneling an overpayment $5 million in federal emergency COVID money from her family's healthcare company into her congressional campaign. She's also accused of buying luxury items with the money.
The 8-member panel that will be hearing her mini trial is evenly split between both parties.
She is charged in Florida with theft of government funds, money laundering, making/receiving straw donor contributions and tax evasion/fraud.
Cherfilus-McCormick maintains that she has done nothing wrong.
