Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was arrested in Daphne, Alabama, on Thursday (July 2) for drug-related charges. According to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, Gillum, 46, faced charges of possession of dangerous drugs, drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana. He was released from custody the following day.
Gillum, who served as Tallahassee's mayor from 2014 to 2018, nearly became Florida's first Black governor in 2018, losing to Republican Ron DeSantis by a narrow margin of less than 34,000 votes. This latest arrest is not his first encounter with legal issues. In 2020, he was found in a Miami Beach hotel room with alleged crystal meth, leading to a stint in rehab. In 2022, Gillum faced federal charges of wire fraud, conspiracy, and making false statements but was acquitted of lying to the FBI in 2023.
WCTV reported that Gillum's arrest in Alabama adds to his history of legal troubles, including a previous indictment for campaign contribution fraud related to his 2018 gubernatorial run. Despite these challenges, Gillum has not publicly commented on the recent arrest.
Local 10 News has requested further details from the Daphne Police Department. As of Tuesday morning (July 7), no additional information has been released.
