A Merritt Island family got an unexpected set of new houseguests this week when a group of raccoons broke into their home and made themselves comfortable.
The homeowners first noticed scratching sounds in the ceiling before realizing several raccoons had taken up residence in their attic. By the time animal control arrived, the animals had spread beyond the attic, knocking over pantry items, scattering trash, and even splashing around in the familyās backyard pool.
Wildlife officials say the raccoons had likely been nesting in the home for several weeks. A mother raccoon was found with her litter in the insulation, while others were seen rummaging through food and exploring different rooms.
āAll it takes is a small opening in a soffit or vent, and raccoons can squeeze right in,ā said one Brevard County animal control officer. āOnce theyāre inside, they can cause thousands of dollars in damage.ā
The raccoons were safely removed and relocated, and the family has since repaired openings around the home to prevent future invasions.
Experts remind residents in Brevard County to secure garbage cans, remove outdoor food sources, and check attics and crawl spaces regularly to keep curious wildlife out.
